Prep Is the Whole Job

Why Raleigh Homeowners Choose Us as Their Interior House Painters

Whether you're refreshing a bedroom, changing the color of your whole main floor, or getting the house ready to list, a good paint job comes down to careful prep, clean lines, a crew that respects your home, and a price that doesn't change halfway through.

We're a small local crew that's been painting and finishing Raleigh homes for over ten years. Because we also handle drywall repair and popcorn ceiling removal, we know how much the surface underneath matters. Whether it's one bedroom or the whole house, every job gets the same care.

Careful Prep Before Every Paint Job

Every wall gets filled, sanded, caulked, and spot-primed before paint goes on, so the finish looks even in afternoon light. If we find something bigger, like a crack that keeps coming back or an old water stain, we can fix it in the same visit instead of sending you to another contractor.

Ceiling Painting Without Lap Marks or Stains

Many house painters treat ceilings as an afterthought, which is how you get roller stripes and a line of old color along the crown. We roll ceilings flat in a true ceiling paint, seal old water stains so they don't bleed through, and keep a straight line where the ceiling meets the wall.

Clean, Respectful Painters in Your Home

Floors covered, furniture moved and wrapped, and every room vacuumed and put back before we call it done. It's the same Zero Mess Guarantee we stand behind on every job, and it's why so many customers have us paint while they're living in the house.

Written Painting Quotes You Can Compare

Your quote lists every room, what's being painted, the paint brand and sheen, the number of coats, and the prep. You can hold any other bid, ours included, to the same standard instead of comparing two totals with no idea what's behind them.

What We Paint

Residential Interior Painting Services in Raleigh

From a single bedroom to every wall, ceiling, and door in the house, these are the home painting services Raleigh homeowners, sellers, and landlords call us for most.

▤

Interior Wall Painting for Every Room

House painter rolling fresh paint on a living room wall in a Raleigh home

We paint bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, hallways, and home offices across Raleigh. Before any paint goes on, we fill and sand dings, caulk gaps along the trim, spot-prime patches, and wipe the walls down so the paint bonds properly. Then we apply two full coats, cutting in by hand and rolling evenly so the color looks consistent from wall to wall.

  • We can paint a single room or several rooms at once.
  • Two coats are standard, and we add a third when a color change calls for it.
  • We use washable, scuff-resistant paint that holds up to everyday life.
◫

Ceiling Painting

Painter rolling flat white paint on a bedroom ceiling in Raleigh

Ceilings yellow over time from cooking, smoke, and age, and in Raleigh they often carry a brown ring from a summer storm leak or an overflowing attic AC drain pan. We seal those stains with a stain-blocking primer so they can't bleed through, then roll on a true flat ceiling paint for an even finish. In shaded homes under Raleigh's tree canopy, a bright, clean ceiling makes a bigger difference to how light a room feels than most people expect.

  • Water and smoke stains are sealed before we paint, so they don't come back.
  • We keep a straight, clean line where the ceiling meets the wall.
  • If your ceiling needs more than paint, we also handle ceiling repair and popcorn ceiling removal in Raleigh.
▭

Trim, Baseboard & Interior Door Painting

Freshly painted white baseboards and interior door trim in a Raleigh home

Trim is the first thing people notice up close, so we treat it with extra care. In Raleigh, seasonal humidity swings open small gaps where trim meets the wall, and many older homes in Five Points, Oakwood, and North Hills still have oil-based enamel under newer paint. We recaulk those gaps, fill nail holes, and test the existing finish before we sand and prime, so your new trim paint stays smooth and doesn't peel.

  • We paint baseboards, door and window casings, crown molding, chair rail, and wainscoting.
  • Interior doors, door frames, and stair risers can be added to the same job.
  • Oil-based trim gets a bonding primer first, and the finish is covered by our written workmanship warranty.
△

Painting Two-Story Foyers, Stairwells & Vaulted Ceilings

The 18-foot foyer is a signature of '90s and 2000s homes in Wakefield, Bedford, Brier Creek, and Cary's Preston, and it's usually the last space homeowners get painted. To do this safely, we set up proper scaffolding and stair planks, never ladders balanced on the steps, and cover your hardwood treads and railings before any work starts. Foyer windows send afternoon light straight across those tall walls, so we roll in full sections to avoid lap marks that would show from the front door.

  • Scaffolding is listed on your quote upfront, so the price won't change once we're on site.
  • Any cracks along the foyer ceiling line are repaired properly before painting, not just caulked.
  • Adding the upstairs hallway or stair railings while the scaffolding is up is the most cost-effective way to do it.
▦

Kitchen Cabinet Painting

Kitchen cabinets freshly painted white in a Raleigh home

Honey oak cabinets are standard in '90s homes across North Raleigh and Cary, and builder-grade white or espresso cabinets fill newer Wake Forest and Holly Springs kitchens. Painting them updates the whole kitchen for a fraction of the cost of replacing them. We remove the doors and hardware, degrease and sand every surface, apply a bonding primer, and finish with a cabinet-grade enamel. In Raleigh's humidity, we give each coat its full cure time so the finish dries hard instead of chipping or sticking.

  • Every door and drawer is labeled, and your hardware goes back exactly where it came from.
  • We use cabinet enamel, never wall paint, and the finish is covered by our written warranty.
  • Your kitchen stays usable during the project, and you'll get the timeline in writing before we start.
🛁

Bathroom Painting

Freshly painted bathroom walls and ceiling in a Raleigh home

Raleigh's humid summers are hard on bathroom paint. When steam has nowhere to go, the ceiling over the shower starts to peel and mildew spots keep coming back, no matter how often you scrub. Many older Raleigh homes, especially mid-century ranches in North Hills and Lakemont, still have original exhaust fans that are too weak, or that vent into the attic instead of outside. We treat and seal the mildew, repaint with a moisture-resistant bathroom paint, and tell you honestly if the fan needs attention, because no paint lasts in a bathroom that never dries out.

  • Mildew is killed and sealed with a stain-blocking primer, never just painted over.
  • Peeling paint above the shower is scraped, repaired, and primed before we repaint.
  • Most bathrooms are finished in a day, and the paint is dry before your next shower.
◧

Accent Walls & Interior Color Changes

Many newer homes in Wake Forest, Holly Springs, and Rolesville came with the same builder gray or beige in every room, and plenty of '90s homes in North Raleigh and Cary still have the deep red dining room or hunter green study from that era. Changing either one takes more than two coats of the new color. We use a tinted primer when it helps, plan the right number of coats before we start, and put that number in your quote, so the price covers the full job and you won't hear "it needs another coat" halfway through.

  • Tinted primers help bold colors and big changes cover evenly.
  • We cut crisp, straight lines on accent walls, two-tone rooms, and ceiling edges.
  • Under Raleigh's tree canopy, colors shift between morning and afternoon, so we're glad to look at your samples on the wall before you commit.
🛠

Wall Repair & Wallpaper Removal Before Painting

Most rooms only need a little patching before paint, and that's included in your quote. Some Raleigh walls need more: wallpaper in '80s and '90s dining rooms and bathrooms, cracked plaster in older homes inside the Beltline, or settling cracks over doorways that our clay soil keeps reopening. Because our crew also does drywall repair, we fix those in the same job, so you don't have to hire a second contractor or wait on another schedule.

  • Wallpaper is removed, and the wall underneath is sealed and smoothed so seams don't show through the paint.
  • Recurring cracks are re-taped instead of caulked, so they stay fixed after the new paint goes on.
  • Any repair beyond normal patching is priced at the estimate, so your quote won't change once we start.
⌂

Whole-House Interior Painting

Painting the whole interior at once is the most cost-effective way to do it, because setup, protection, and cleanup are shared across every room. Many of our whole-house jobs are for families relocating to the Triangle for work at RTP, who want everything painted in the gap between closing and the moving truck. If you're already living in the house, we work room by room, so you always have a bedroom to sleep in and a kitchen to use, and we clean up at the end of every day.

  • You'll get a written schedule before we start, with each room's finish date.
  • Open floor plans common in '90s Raleigh and Cary homes get one consistent color and finish plan throughout.
  • The same crew handles your house from the first room to the final walkthrough.
🔑

Painting Before Selling, Moving Out, or Renting

Raleigh buyers often tour new construction the same weekend they see your home, so fresh, neutral paint is one of the most affordable ways to ensure attractive listing photos. For landlords, rentals near NC State and downtown tend to turn over in the same few weeks every summer, so the gap between tenants is short. Tell us your photo date or lease date, and we'll plan the work backward from it so the home is ready on time.

  • Nail holes, anchor holes, and scuffs are patched in the same visit, so there's one punch list instead of two.
  • We can coordinate directly with your agent or property manager and send progress photos by text.
  • Landlords can use one standard color across units, so future touch-ups always match.

What Affects the Cost of Interior Painting?

Wall area, not floor area. A 12x12 bedroom with 9-foot ceilings has about 430 square feet of wall. The 9- and 10-foot ceilings common in newer Wake Forest and Holly Springs homes add wall area even when the floor plan is the same size.

Prep. This is the biggest hidden difference between bids. A painter who skips patching, caulking, and spot priming can quote low and finish fast, but the walls won't look right when the afternoon sun comes through the window.

Trim and doors. Painting baseboards, door frames, and molding takes a steady hand and more time than rolling walls. Older homes inside the Beltline often have wide door frames and extra decorative molding, so the trim can take longer to paint than the walls themselves.

Color change. Covering a dark color, or going dark over light, usually needs a primer coat or a third coat. A good quote tells you which.

Paint line. Premium paints from Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore cost more per gallon but cover and wash better. On a whole house, the upgrade usually adds a few hundred dollars, not thousands.

Furniture and access. An empty house between closing and move-in is the fastest job there is. A fully furnished home with a two-story foyer takes more setup.

How Much Do House Painters Charge Per Hour in Raleigh?

Most interior painters in Raleigh charge around $40 to $75 an hour per painter, with paint billed separately. We give you one firm price instead, in writing, before we start. Paint takes longer to dry in humid Raleigh summers, and on an hourly rate that waiting time lands on your bill. With us, if a wall needs an extra coat or a touch-up to look right, we cover it, and the price you approved is the price you pay.

Matched to Your House

Interior House Painting Across Raleigh Neighborhoods

The year your house was built tells us most of what we'll find on its walls and trim. Here's how painting jobs differ across the area.

Painting Historic Homes in Five Points, Oakwood & Boylan Heights

Homes in Five Points, Hayes Barton, Oakwood, Boylan Heights, and Mordecai often have tall ceilings, original plaster walls, and trim with decades of paint on it. They're beautiful homes to paint, but they need a careful approach. We test old trim before sanding, use lead-safe practices in homes built before 1978, and repair plaster cracks before any color goes on. The result is fresh paint that respects the home's original character.

  • Old trim, doors, and windows are prepped using lead-safe practices.
  • Plaster cracks are repaired properly, so they don't show through the new paint.
  • Tall walls, picture rail, and detailed molding are painted with clean, crisp lines.

Painting Mid-Century Ranches in North Hills & Lakemont

Ranches in North Hills, Lakemont, Longview Gardens, and Method were built in the 1950s and '60s with drywall that's thinner than today's, so nail pops and crumbling edges are common. Many also have a wood-paneled den that owners are ready to brighten up. We fix the wall problems first, prime paneling so the paint sticks and wood tones don't bleed through, and leave you with rooms that feel updated without losing the home's charm.

  • Nail pops are screwed back down and patched, so they don't pop through the new paint.
  • Wood paneling is primed and painted for a clean, finished look.
  • If your home still has popcorn ceilings, we can remove the popcorn and smooth your ceilings before the repaint.

Interior Painters for North Raleigh Two-Stories: Wakefield, Bedford & Brier Creek

We paint a lot of '90s and 2000s two-stories in Wakefield, Bedford, Brier Creek, and Stonebridge, and we usually find the same three problems: a two-story foyer that's never been repainted because it's hard to reach, builder flat paint that scuffs and won't wipe clean, and a crack along the top-floor ceiling that reopens every winter as the roof framing shifts. Because our crew handles both drywall repair and painting, we can fix that ceiling crack properly and paint the room in the same visit, with scaffolding and repairs listed on your quote from the start.

  • Tall foyers and stairwells are painted from stable scaffolding, with your stairs and railings fully protected.
  • Winter ceiling cracks are re-taped instead of caulked, so they stop coming back after we leave.
  • Builder flat paint is replaced with a washable finish, so everyday scuffs wipe right off.

Repainting New Construction in Wake Forest, Holly Springs & Rolesville

In newer neighborhoods across Wake Forest, Holly Springs, Rolesville, and Fuquay-Varina, we usually see the same pattern. The house looks great on move-in day, then the first heating season dries out the new framing and the walls start to show it: nail pops in the hallway, hairline cracks over doorways, and builder flat paint that smears when you try to wipe it. If your home is under a year old, start with your builder's warranty. After that, our crew can handle the drywall repair and the painting together, so the cracks are fixed before the new color goes on.

  • Nail pops and settling cracks are repaired first, so they don't show through your fresh paint.
  • Builder beige and gray can be replaced with other colors.
  • We use durable, washable finishes that stand up to kids, pets, and busy hallways.

Condo & Townhome Painting in Downtown Raleigh & North Hills

In condos and townhomes around Glenwood South, the Warehouse District, and North Hills, the paint is the easy part. The building is what takes planning: HOA work hours, elevator reservations, insurance certificates for property management, and hallways that have to stay clean. We handle all of that before the first day, so you don't have to play middleman. We also see a lot of ceiling stains from leaks in the unit above, and our crew can repair the ceiling and paint it in the same visit.

  • We send our insurance certificate to your property manager and schedule around building rules.
  • Low-odor, low-VOC paint keeps shared hallways and neighbors comfortable.
  • Your unit stays livable, with every room cleaned up at the end of each day.

Rental Property Painting Near NC State & Downtown Raleigh

Rentals near NC State, the Village District, and downtown tend to turn over in the same few weeks every summer, and we see the same things in almost every unit: nail and anchor holes, scuffed hallways, and touch-up paint that doesn't quite match. We started out patching rentals around NC State, so we know how tight those windows are. To make your life easier, we can patch and paint in the same visit, send progress photos so you don't have to drive over, and finish before your next tenant's move-in date.

  • One standard color and sheen across your units, so future touch-ups always match.
  • Scuff-resistant eggshell that cleans easily and holds up between tenants.
  • Multiple units or properties are priced together for a better rate.
What to Expect

How Our Interior Painting Process Works

Painters like to say a good paint job is 80% prep and 20% painting. Here's exactly what happens from your free estimate to the final walkthrough.

1

Free In-Home Estimate & Written Quote

We walk every room with you, point out any repairs, and talk through colors and sheens. In older homes, we also test the trim for oil-based paint so we know how to prime it. Your written quote lists each room, the paint we'll use, the number of coats, and the prep, and that number is the price you pay.

2

Protecting Your Floors & Furniture

We cover your floors with drop cloths and runners, move furniture to the center of each room, and wrap it. Outlet covers and hardware are removed, bagged, and labeled. When we sand, we tape off the vents so dust stays in that room instead of traveling through your HVAC.

3

Wall Repair & Surface Prep

We screw down nail pops, fill holes, re-tape cracks, sand rough spots, and caulk gaps along the trim. Raleigh's humidity swings open those trim gaps every year, so we never skip this step. We also clean any greasy or dirty spots so the new paint bonds, because this step decides how your walls look a year from now.

4

Priming Patches, Stains & Glossy Trim

Every patch gets primed so it doesn't show through as a dull spot. Water stains from storm leaks or attic AC overflows get a stain-blocking primer so they can't bleed back. Glossy or oil-based trim, wood paneling, and cabinets get a bonding primer so the new paint grips instead of peeling.

5

Painting Ceilings, Walls & Trim

We paint ceilings first so any drips land on walls that haven't been painted yet. Walls are cut in by hand and rolled in full sections to avoid lap marks, and trim goes last for clean, straight lines. In humid Raleigh summers, we run the AC or a dehumidifier and give each coat its full drying time instead of rushing it.

6

Final Walkthrough & Cleanup

Before we call it done, we check every wall with a light held at a low angle, the way afternoon sun hits it, and touch up anything that shows. Then we put your furniture back, reinstall covers, vacuum, and walk through the finished rooms with you. You'll keep labeled leftover paint so future touch-ups always match.

Finish Guide

Best Paint Finish for Each Room: Flat, Eggshell, Satin or Semi-Gloss?

The finish, or sheen, decides how easy a wall is to clean and how much it shows imperfections. Shinier paint wipes clean more easily but highlights every bump, which matters on older plaster walls in Raleigh and Durham. Here's what we recommend for each room in a Triangle home.

RoomBest FinishWhy It Works
CeilingsFlatHides roller marks and drywall seams, and doesn't reflect glare from windows and recessed lights.
Living rooms & bedroomsMatte or eggshellA soft, modern look. Today's washable mattes clean far better than the builder flat many newer Wake County homes came with.
Older plaster wallsMatteLow sheen hides the gentle waves in century-old plaster common in Five Points, Oakwood, and Durham's Trinity Park.
Hallways, stairwells & kids' roomsEggshell or satinThese walls get touched and bumped every day, and a little more sheen means fingerprints wipe right off.
Entryways & mudroomsSatinStands up to scuffs, wet shoes, and the red clay dust that finds its way into every Triangle entryway.
KitchensSatinResists cooking grease and holds up to regular cleaning.
Bathrooms & laundry roomsSatin, bath-ratedResists steam and mildew, which matters in a humid Raleigh summer.
Trim, baseboards & doorsSemi-glossHard, scrubbable, and frames the walls with a crisp contrast.
CabinetsSatin or semi-gloss cabinet enamelCures hard and resists sticking, chipping, and fingerprints. Never regular wall paint.

What paint do we use? For most Raleigh homes, we recommend premium lines from Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore, matched to the room and your budget. Both brands have stores all over the Triangle, so matching a color for future touch-ups is easy. If you already have a brand or color you love, we'll use it. Whatever we use is named on your quote, along with the finish and number of coats, so you'll know exactly what's going on your walls. Low-VOC and zero-VOC paints are also available. VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are the chemicals that give fresh paint its strong smell, so these paints are a good choice for nurseries, bedrooms, and anyone sensitive to paint fumes.

Picking Colors

How to Choose Interior Paint Colors for Your Raleigh Home

The color that looked perfect on a two-inch chip at the paint store can look completely different on your wall. Light is the reason, and a few simple habits make picking a color much less stressful.

Test paint colors before you commit. Paint sample boards at least two feet square, or use peel-and-stick samples, and put them on two different walls in the room. Look at them in the morning, mid-afternoon, and at night with your lamps on. Most color regret comes from judging a sample in only one kind of light.

Best paint colors for shaded rooms. Under Raleigh's tree canopy, north- and east-facing rooms tend to look cool and dim. Warm whites and soft greiges usually feel better there. South- and west-facing rooms get strong afternoon light that can push warm colors toward yellow, so cooler neutrals often balance them out.

Popular neutral paint colors in Triangle homes. Greiges like Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray and Repose Gray, and warm whites like Alabaster, are all over Raleigh, Cary, and Durham homes because they work with oak floors, granite, and white trim. They're also safe choices if you're painting before you sell.

Painting over dark colors. Dark reds, navy, and deep greens need a tinted primer or an extra coat, and so does going from a dark color back to a light one. We'll tell you at the estimate and include it in your price, so there are no surprises.

Getting help choosing paint colors. We're happy to look at your samples during the estimate and share what we've seen work in homes like yours. We're not interior designers, but after painting many Raleigh living rooms, we know which colors people end up happy with.

Planning Your Project

How Much Paint Do You Need for a Room?

A gallon of interior paint covers about 350 to 400 square feet per coat. Multiply the room's perimeter by the wall height to get wall area, then plan for two coats.

RoomApprox. Wall AreaPaint for Two Coats
10x10, 8 ft ceilings~320 sq ft2 gallons
12x12, 8 ft ceilings~385 sq ft2–3 gallons
12x14, 9 ft ceilings~470 sq ft3 gallons
14x16, 9 ft ceilings~540 sq ft3–4 gallons
15x20 living room, 9 ft ceilings~630 sq ft4 gallons
12x12 ceiling~145 sq ft1 gallon

Don't subtract doors and windows unless they're unusually large. Add a gallon for deep colors, rough surfaces, or unprimed patches.

Scheduling

How Long Does It Take to Paint a Room or House Interior?

Most of the time on a paint job goes to prep and drying, not rolling paint. In Raleigh and Durham, humidity also plays a role, since summer coats can take twice as long to dry as fall coats.

ProjectTypical TimelineWhat Affects It
One bedroom1 dayAdd a day for heavy repairs or a dark-to-light color change.
Bathroom1 dayMildew treatment and peeling ceilings from shower steam can add time.
Two-story foyer & stairwell1–2 daysScaffolding setup and railing work, common in North Raleigh and Cary two-stories.
Main level, open floor plan2–4 daysWhether ceilings and trim are included.
Older home with plaster wallsAdd 1–2 daysPlaster crack repair and lead-safe trim prep in Five Points, Oakwood, and Durham's Trinity Park.
Whole house, 2,000–2,500 sq ft4–7 working daysWhether you're living there, how much furniture, and how many colors.
Kitchen cabinets5–7 working daysPrimer and enamel need cure time between coats, longer in humid weather.

How long paint takes to dry vs. cure. Latex paint is dry to the touch in about an hour, but it takes two to four weeks to fully harden, and longer during a humid Triangle summer. Wait a few days before hanging pictures or pushing furniture against fresh walls, and hold off on scrubbing for a couple of weeks.

Best time of year to paint in Raleigh. Interior painting works year-round, but fall and early spring are the easiest seasons because lower humidity helps paint dry faster. If you're painting in summer, we run the AC or a dehumidifier so coats dry properly, and the timeline we quote already accounts for it.

Honest Advice

DIY Interior Painting vs. Hiring House Painters

Plenty of painting is reasonable to do yourself. Here's the same advice we'd give a neighbor.

The JobDIY or Hire?Why
One bedroom, similar color, walls in good shapeDIY itA weekend, good tape, a decent roller, and patience will get it done. If it's summer, run the AC so each coat dries properly in Raleigh's humidity.
CeilingsHireOverhead rolling is tiring, and lap marks show in every light. Most DIY ceilings end up with stripes, especially in rooms with big windows.
Two-story foyers and stairwellsHireLeaning ladders on stairs is how people get hurt. The 18-foot foyers in many North Raleigh and Cary two-stories need proper scaffolding.
Walls with cracks, nail pops, or old patchesHire, or at least hire the repairsFresh paint makes wall flaws more visible. Settling cracks from our clay soil reopen if they're just filled, so the repair is best done professionally.
Old trim in a pre-1978 houseHire a lead-safe contractorMany homes in Five Points, Oakwood, and Durham's Trinity Park have lead paint under newer coats, and sanding it releases lead dust. We work in these older homes every week, so we test the trim first, contain the work area, sand with dust-capturing equipment, and clean up thoroughly, so your family stays safe and the trim looks crisp.
Kitchen cabinetsHireThis is the DIY paint job we're most often called to redo. Prep and cabinet enamel make or break it, and humid weather makes rushed coats stay sticky.
Whole house before listingHireRaleigh and Cary buyers often tour new construction the same weekend, so sloppy cut lines stand out in listing photos. A pro crew also keeps you on your photo date.

How to Choose the Best House Painters in Raleigh: 8 Questions to Ask

What prep work is included in the painting quote? Ask exactly what happens to nail pops, cracks, holes, and gaps along the trim. "We'll patch it up" isn't an answer. Our answer: small repairs, caulking, and spot priming are included in every quote, and anything bigger is priced before we start.

What should a written painting estimate include? It should name the rooms, the surfaces, the paint brand, the finish, and the number of coats. Two quotes that are far apart usually differ on exactly these details. Our answer: every quote we write lists all of them, room by room.

Are the painters licensed and insured? General liability insurance protects your home if something gets damaged. Our answer: we carry insurance, hold a full NC general contractor license, and send proof of both with your quote.

How will they handle lead paint in an older home? If your home was built before 1978, the painter should explain how they'll contain dust and work lead-safe. Our answer: we test trim before sanding and use lead-safe practices in older Raleigh and Durham homes.

Who will actually paint my house? Some companies sell the job and hand it to whichever subcontractor is free that week. Our answer: the same small local crew that quotes your job is the crew that paints it.

How will they protect my floors and furniture? Listen for specifics like drop cloths, floor runners, moving and wrapping furniture, and covering vents when sanding. Our answer: all of that, plus a Zero Mess Guarantee and a daily cleanup.

Is the warranty in writing? Peeling, poor adhesion, and cut lines that bleed should be covered. A handshake promise isn't worth much six months later. Our answer: every job comes with a written workmanship warranty.

How much deposit should a painter ask for? A reasonable deposit to schedule the job and buy materials is normal. Paying most of the job upfront is a red flag. Our answer: we'll go over the payment schedule in your written quote, so there are no surprises.

Rules & Paperwork

Do You Need a Permit to Paint the Inside of Your House in Raleigh?

No. Interior painting is cosmetic work, and neither the City of Raleigh nor the surrounding towns require a permit for it. HOAs and Raleigh's historic district commission only regulate exteriors, so the color of your living room is entirely your call. The two exceptions are practical ones: condo buildings often have rules about work hours, elevator use, and contractor insurance certificates, and pre-1978 homes call for lead-safe work practices when painted surfaces are disturbed.

North Carolina only requires a general contractor license on projects of $40,000 or more, so most painting jobs don't legally need one. We hold a full NC general contractor license anyway, carry insurance, and send proof of both with the quote.

Local House Painters in Raleigh for 10+ Years

We started out patching walls in rentals around NC State, grew into ceilings and popcorn ceiling removal, and painting followed naturally, because nearly every repair we finished needed paint to be truly done. Homeowners kept asking if we'd just paint the room while we were there. Now we paint whole houses across Raleigh, Durham, and the Triangle.

We're still a small crew. The person who walks your house for the estimate is someone who'll be on the job, and when you call, someone picks up. You get one firm price, one team responsible for the walls and the paint, and a written warranty on both.

Questions We Hear Every Week

Raleigh Interior Painting FAQs

Are there house painters near me in Raleigh, NC?

Yes, we're a family-owned painting and drywall company that's been working in Triangle homes for 10+ years. We paint home interiors across Raleigh, from Five Points and North Hills up through Wakefield and Brier Creek, plus Cary, Apex, Wake Forest, Garner, Morrisville, and Durham. Estimates are always free. Call us at (984) 208-2958, and we can usually give you a rough price the same day, before we ever come out.

How much does it cost to paint an interior room?

It depends mostly on the size of the room. In Raleigh, a half bath typically costs $175 to $350 to paint, a standard 12x12 bedroom $400 to $750, and a 15x20 living room $600 to $1,200, with walls only, two coats, labor and paint included. Adding the ceiling, trim, and doors usually adds 50 to 60 percent.

Where your room falls in the range depends on four things: wall area (9-foot ceilings cost more than 8-foot), what's included (walls only, or ceiling, trim, and doors too), how much wall repair is needed, and whether a big color change needs an extra coat. A walls-only repaint in a similar color is the most affordable option.

What is the 80/20 rule in painting?

The 80/20 rule is a rule of thumb and it's used in two different ways.

For painters, it's about prep. It means about 80 percent of a good paint job is preparation and only 20 percent is actually painting. Prep includes moving and covering furniture, filling holes, fixing nail pops, sanding, caulking gaps along the trim, and priming patches and stains. In Raleigh homes, prep matters even more: humidity swings open gaps around trim every year, older homes often have glossy oil-based trim that new paint won't stick to without primer, and settling cracks from our clay soil come back if they're just painted over. Skipping these steps is why some paint jobs look fine on day one but show cracks, peeling, or dull patches a few months later.

For decorating, it's about color. It means using one main color for about 80 percent of a room and an accent color for the other 20 percent, such as an accent wall, trim, or a painted ceiling. This keeps a room balanced instead of busy.

When you're hiring a painter, the prep version is the one that matters. Ask any painter what prep is included in their quote, because that's what decides how your walls look a year from now.

Cost & Pricing

What is the cost to paint the interior of a house in Raleigh?

For a typical 2,000 square foot Raleigh home, painting the walls, ceilings, and trim costs about $5,000 to $9,000. Painting just the walls costs about $3,400 to $6,100. That works out to roughly $2.50 to $4.50 per square foot of floor area for a full repaint. Simple one-color repaints land at the lower end, while two-story foyers, vaulted rooms, detailed trim, and big color changes push toward the top. See our interior painting cost calculator, or call (984) 208-2958 for a free quote on your home.

How much do house painters charge per hour in Raleigh?

Hourly painters in Raleigh typically charge about $40 to $75 per painter per hour, plus the cost of paint. The catch is that you don't know your total until the job is done. Painting has a lot of waiting built in, and in Raleigh's humid summers coats can take twice as long to dry. On an hourly rate, every slow-drying day, extra coat, or unexpected touch-up adds to your bill.

That's why we quote one firm price per job instead, with labor, paint, and prep all included and written down before we start. You know your total upfront, you can compare it fairly against other quotes, and if a wall needs an extra coat to look right, that's our cost, not yours. It also means we're motivated to do the job right the first time, not to stretch it out.

How much does it cost to paint a ceiling?

Most standard-height ceilings in Raleigh cost $150 to $350 per room to paint. Vaulted ceilings and two-story foyers cost more because they need scaffolding, and we list that on your quote upfront, so the price won't change once we start. If your ceiling has water stains from a roof leak or an attic AC overflow, we seal them with a stain-blocking primer so they can't bleed back through the new paint. And if your ceiling has popcorn texture, we'll tell you honestly that painting over it rarely looks good. Popcorn ceiling removal is usually the better investment.

Is it cheaper to paint the whole house at once?

Absolutely. The setup, protection, material runs, and cleanup cost about the same whether we paint one room or ten, so spreading them across the whole house lowers the price of each room. If you're planning to paint several rooms over the next year, doing them together will save you money.

Is the cost of paint included in your price?

Yes. Our quotes include paint, primer, caulk, patching materials, and supplies. The paint brand, line, and sheen are written on the quote. If you want a specific brand or already bought your paint, we can adjust the price.

Paint, Sheen & Color

What paint finish is best for interior walls?

It depends on the room, because each finish balances looks and cleanability differently:

  • Living rooms and bedrooms: washable matte or eggshell. Matte hides small wall flaws and looks modern, and eggshell wipes clean a little more easily.
  • Hallways and kids' rooms: eggshell or satin. These walls get touched and bumped every day, and a bit more sheen lets fingerprints wipe right off.
  • Kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms: satin. It resists grease, steam, and mildew, which matters in a humid Raleigh summer.
  • Ceilings: flat. It hides roller marks and doesn't reflect glare from windows and lights.
  • Trim and doors: semi-gloss. It's hard and scrubbable, so it stands up to vacuums, kids, and pets.

If your newer Raleigh home still has the builder's original flat paint, that's why fingerprints smear when you try to wipe them. Upgrading to a washable matte keeps the same soft look but lets you clean your walls. We'll recommend a finish for each room at your free estimate and write it on your quote. See our interior paint finish guide for more.

What's the best paint for a bathroom in Raleigh's humidity?

A good bathroom paint job in Raleigh comes down to three things:

  • Bath-rated satin paint. It has mildew resistance built in, and its smooth finish sheds steam and wipes clean, unlike flat paint, which soaks up moisture.
  • Stain-blocking primer first. Mildew spots and water stains bleed through regular paint, so sealing them first keeps them from coming back.
  • An exhaust fan that works. In a humid Raleigh summer, even the best paint peels in a bathroom that never dries out. Many older homes, especially mid-century ranches, have fans that are too weak or vent into the attic instead of outside.

We handle the first two as part of every bathroom job, and we'll tell you honestly if your fan is the real problem, so you're not repainting the same peeling ceiling every few years.

Can you paint latex over oil-based trim?

Yes, but not directly. Latex paint can't grip glossy oil-based paint, so it looks fine at first and then peels off when the trim gets bumped. Oil-based trim is common in older Raleigh and Durham homes, often hidden under newer coats. Here's how we paint it the right way:

  • Test it first. We rub a small spot with denatured alcohol. If the paint softens, it's latex. If it doesn't, it's oil.
  • Sand it lightly. Scuffing the glossy surface gives the new paint something to grip.
  • Prime it. A bonding primer goes on before the new paint, so the finish sticks for good.

In homes built before 1978, old trim may also contain lead paint, so we sand it using lead-safe practices to keep dust out of your home.

Do you help choose paint colors?

Yes, we can look at your samples during the estimate, tell you how they'll look in your room's light, and share what we've seen work in similar homes. For a full color plan, a designer or the free color consultations at local paint stores are great resources too.

How many coats of paint does a room need?

Two coats for most repaints. One coat almost never gives even color and sheen, even with paint-and-primer products. Expect a primer coat or a third coat for dark-to-light changes, deep colors, new drywall, or patched areas. The coat count should always be written on your quote if you're hiring a house painter.

Process & Timing

How long does it take to paint a room or a whole house?

A single room usually takes one day. A main level takes two to four days, and a whole 2,000 to 2,500 square foot house takes about four to seven working days when you're living there. Empty houses run faster. Kitchen cabinets take five to seven working days because the primer and enamel need cure time. See our interior painting timeline table.

Should you paint the ceiling or the walls first?

Paint the ceiling first. The order matters because each step protects the one before it:

  • Ceiling first. Any drips or roller spatter land on walls that haven't been painted yet, so nothing gets ruined.
  • Walls second. You can cut a clean line along the ceiling without worrying about touching up the ceiling afterward.
  • Trim and doors last. Painting trim against the finished wall color gives you the sharpest, straightest lines.

This is the order we follow in every room, and it's one of the easiest ways to get a professional-looking result if you're painting yourself.

Do I need to move my furniture before the painters come?

Just a little. Here's how it usually breaks down:

  • What you clear: small items like decor, lamps, books, pictures on the walls, and anything fragile or valuable.
  • What we handle: we move larger furniture like beds, dressers, and sofas to the center of the room, cover it with plastic, and put everything back when we're done.
  • What to mention ahead of time: pianos, heavy entertainment centers, antiques, or anything you'd rather we not touch, so we can plan around it.

We'll walk through this together at your free estimate, so there are no surprises on painting day and you're not stuck moving heavy furniture yourself.

How long should paint dry before hanging pictures or moving furniture back?

Paint feels dry quickly, but it takes a few weeks to fully harden. Here's a simple timeline to follow:

  • About 1 hour: dry to the touch. In humid Raleigh summers, it can take longer.
  • Same day: we put your furniture back, leaving a small gap from the walls so nothing sticks.
  • 2 to 3 days: safe to hang pictures and push furniture against the walls.
  • About 2 weeks: safe to wipe or scrub the walls.
  • 2 to 4 weeks: fully cured and as tough as it will get.

We'll leave you labeled leftover paint for future touch-ups, and if anything gets scuffed while the paint is still curing, just give us a call.

Can you paint in Raleigh year-round?

Yes, year-round. In summer we keep the AC running and add dehumidifiers when needed so coats dry properly. In winter the house just needs to stay heated, ideally above 50 degrees. Interior painting is one of the few home projects that doesn't depend on the weather.

Can I stay in my house while you paint?

Yes, and most of our customers do. We work room by room so you always have a place to sleep and a working kitchen, use low-odor paint, and clean up each day. If you have pets, keeping them out of the room we're working in is the main thing to plan for.

Older Homes & Special Cases

My house was built before 1978. Do I need to worry about lead paint?

It's worth taking seriously, but it's very manageable with the right crew. Lead paint isn't dangerous when it's sealed under newer coats. The risk comes from sanding or scraping it, which is why it matters most on old trim, doors, and windows. We work in older Raleigh and Durham homes every week, from Five Points and Oakwood to Trinity Park, so we test the trim before any sanding, seal off the work area, avoid dry sanding and heat guns, and clean up thoroughly before we leave. You'll know exactly how we're handling it before we start, and your family stays safe while your home gets a fresh finish.

Can you paint plaster walls?

We can! Plaster takes paint beautifully once it's prepped the right way. The catch is that plaster cracks and loosens differently than drywall, so a quick drywall-style patch usually cracks right back through the new paint within a year. We paint plaster walls every week in older homes across Five Points, Oakwood, Boylan Heights, and Durham's Trinity Park, and because our crew also handles plaster repair, we stabilize loose spots and repair cracks with methods made for plaster before any paint goes on. That means your fresh paint stays smooth, and you won't be calling someone back to fix the same cracks next winter.

Can you paint over wallpaper?

We don't recommend it. Seams show through, and the moisture in paint can make the paper bubble or peel. The better route is removing the paper, sealing any torn drywall paper with a primer, and skim coating where needed. In the rare case where removal would destroy the wall, we can seal the wallpaper with an oil-based primer and skim over it.

Why do nail pops and cracks show up after painting?

Usually because they were painted over instead of fixed. Wood framing in Raleigh homes moves with our humid summers and dry winters, and the clay soil shifts houses a little every season. Nail pops need to be screwed down and patched, and returning cracks need to be re-taped, not caulked. Because we're drywall finishers, those repairs are part of our prep.

Hiring a Painter

Are there interior painting companies that also repair drywall?

Yes, that's us. We're a Raleigh drywall contractor that also paints, so cracks, holes, nail pops, water stains, and wallpaper damage are fixed by the same crew that paints the room. You get one quote, one schedule, and one team responsible for how it looks. Call (984) 208-2958 for a free estimate anywhere in Raleigh and the Triangle.

Do painters need a license in North Carolina?

North Carolina has no separate painting license. A general contractor license is only required on projects of $40,000 or more, so most painting jobs legally don't need one. What matters more is liability insurance, lead-safe practices for pre-1978 homes, and a written warranty. We hold a full NC general contractor license anyway and send proof of license and insurance with every quote.

How often should you repaint interior walls?

Busy areas like hallways, kids' rooms, and kitchens usually look tired after five to seven years. Bedrooms and formal rooms can go seven to ten. Trim and doors take the most abuse and often need a refresh every five years or so. But quality paint and the right paint finish for the area can stretch those numbers.

Is it worth painting before selling a house in Raleigh?

Yes, fresh paint in neutral colors is one of the least expensive and quickest things you can do before listing photos, and it makes rooms look bigger and cleaner. Pair it with a drywall punch list for nail holes and dings, and if your ceilings still have popcorn texture, see our resale guide.
